As the Radio 4 continuity announcer said at the end of this evenings episode, this story will run and run.

E-coli at Bridge Farm if confirmed will be a major story line which will affect the whole village affecting the operation of Bridge Farm and the lives of Tony and Pat and the whole family and also Clarrie and Susan whose jobs could be at risk.

It looks as if Clarrie's recent stomach upset during Wimbledon fortnight could be key to this story. She thought she had eaten some of Eddie's "dodgy burgers" but where did Eddie get the contents of the burgers from? Who else in Ambridge has been/will be affected by the bug?

It certainly is. And it makes you realise how devasting this type of incident can be for farmers/producers. Closed down at a moment's notice. Even if they are totally cleared the business, which they have worked so hard to build up, could be seriously damaged.

Poor Pat indeed. But poor Clarrie!

The e-coli outbreak may only be the start of problems for Bridge Farm. A report on 5 Live the other suggests people are cutting back on buying organic produce.

Although it is understandable that Pat is distraught at the prospect of losing her business, she cannot lay the blame entirely with Clarrie. As the employer and owner she is responsible for ensuring that all health and safety procedures are in place. If an employee has been suffering from D and V then they should not be allowed to go back to work without being clear from symptons for 48 hours and should be asked to provide stool samples to be tested to find cause and to prove they are free of bacteria.

Rosie, Pat didn't know that Clarrie had been ill. It happened during Clarrie's days off and she didn't tell Pat on her return. Life is tough enough for employers regulation-wise without having to add clairvoyance to their management skills.

Beat me to it CaptainSwing, I was just going to point this out. As Clarrie was better on her return to work, she quite naturally didn't think to mention the fact that she had been ill to her employer. I feel very sorry for everyone concerned and I hope that the business can recover and that Clarrie can carry on working for Pat. Clarrie is such a lovely caring person. I thought that Susan was going to spill the beans to Vicky last night - we all know what she's like. However, although she was rather judgmental, she managed to restrain herself, for a wonder.

Clarrie's case is indefensible. She told both Pat and the E.H.O. that she didn't report her illness because she felt "as right as rain" on the Saturday (i.e. 48 hours before returning to work) Eddie, however, has now "reminded" Clarrie that in fact she was still unwell and dashing to the toilet on the Saturday. Clarrie would therefore appear to have lied to both Pat and the E.H.O. and if for no other reason, should be fired.

Another factor in the e-coli outbreak is tha it happened at the gymkhana in Edgeley. During the afternoon Jill promised to buy Lilly and Freddie ice-creams but they decided to have hot dogs instead.

I think that at sometime stage in the not distant future Elizabeth will realise - perhaps through a comment from Jill perhaps- that the twins could have had some of the ice cream at the gymkhana and this will result in Elizabeth reacting by withdrawing herself and her family even more. As far as Elizabeth is concerned David is to blame for Nigels death and now Pat and Tony's ice cream could have put her childrens health at risk.

How very astute of you, Ambridgewanderer, if I may say so. I certainly hadn't thought of this incident: it could well be significant.

I think that Pat should have done her interview about the e-coli outbreak at Bridge Farm "live" on BBC Radio Borsetshire instead of doing a "pre-record". I have a feeling that when the interview is aired later this week the edited version may not give quite the impression Pat intended.

I am sure that you're right Ambridgewanderer. Pat seemed very pleased with it - It's a little too good to be true.

E.coli is the most prevalent bacteria that we have today. Thus, Scientists from the University of California LA have come up with a device that can put a cellular phone to use fighting food-borne illness. The device, which is only a prototype, uses LED and ultraviolet lights to identify E. coli bacteria. Source for this article: UCLA scientists create E coli detector attachment for cell phones. Perhaps, this is one of the best invention for prevenion of illness today.
