Oh dear oh dear oh dear, how very rude Sharon was on the phone to 'Poor Pat'. Talk about bearing a grudge, has she never heard of letting bygones be bygones? Say what you like, we'd all have given Sharon her marching orders 14 years or so ago, she was a trifle vin ordinaire so not really very suitable for John. Had he lived he'd probably have helped her organise a termination, which is a trifle ironic (perhaps she should have called him John!). Anyway we can all look forward to bags of angst and hand wringing from 'Poor Pat' for the next two months (dear Lord), or will there be a Christmas resolution of the issue to give us all a warm glow?
I still maintain that a morning with Jeremy Kyle would sort it all out, he and his friend, the show's psychiatrist, would soon put things right, and save us poor listeners weeks of misery.
Merry Xmas all, must dash the lady Vicar is on her way for a PCC and I haven't written the minutes for September yet!!
Final thought, had there been terminations around 2000 years ago our Carol Service might have been a non runner! Phew!

Oh, I didn't think Sharon was rude! I thought she explained herself very well, quite calmly and succinctly. And, of course, there's irony here---Pat encouraged Helen to have a 'no father' baby, but now she learns that her dead son has become a 'no father' to a child, has been cut out of the equation, so to speak, it's different. And unlike Henry, Rich has a father through Eamon.

Well, Sharon was certainly honest; it would have been difficult to say all that she had to say politely, but I hope she can find in her heart to forgive Pat and Tony. Sharon told Pat what she wanted to hear - Rich IS John's son, but sadly neither Pat or Tony, as far as I remember, showed any kindness at all to Sharon; she did love John and could have made him very happy, but they decided that she would never be good enough for their son. Now Pat has decided that Sharon's son is, and wants him (and Pat that WILL mean Sharon as well) to be part of the family. They SHOULD have told Sharon about John.

I also think that it was wrong of Pat to agree with Tony that they were doing the right thing by not pursuing this relationship, only to go off and immediately contact Sharon, although I do see the temptation. Pat, Sharon has told you that Rich is happy as he is - don't try to disrupt his life; this can not lead to any happiness for anyone.

And as for abortions not being available 2000 years ago - I think that women have known how to get rid of unwanted babies for longer than tnat. But do you really think this was an option? Would Mary and Joseph EVER have considered such a step? Do you really think that God's plan could have ended in this way? I realise that your comments weren't meant to be taken seriously, but many Christians would find this idea, even in some sort of jest, reprehensible.

Tom and Helen are all set for a big yelling match with 'Poor Pat'.
Helen seems to be playing the "if you don't do what I say I'll stop eating again", (reminiscent of Violet Elizabeth's "I'll scream and scream until I'm sick" ploy).
Tony's answer should be "good, more turkey for us then".
I don't remember eating disorders existing when I was a child, call her bluff Tony, leave a nice pork pie in the fridge and see if its still there in the morning!
Don't forget to eat your sprouts.

I thought Sharon was wonderful. Her manner was controlled and incisive, and at last someone has confronted Pat with her own class snobbery and self-centredness and shown her the effects her unpleasant behaviour can have on those she considers beneath her. Well done Sharon! Pat is uaually bad-tempered and impatient with others, particularly members of the 'lower orders' - now the boot's on the other foot.

Maxjoe I agree with you 100%. Despite her Guardian reading green views in her own way Pat is just as big a snob as Jennifer. At least Jennifer doesn't pretend otherwise.
I also agree with Floradora. Pat's all for a father free test tube baby for Helen but when it's the dreadful Sharon another set of rules apply

Agree with both of you. Pat's cry of, 'If only you had said' won't wash. Why didn't Pat and Tony 'say' about John? Why SHOULD Sharon have 'said' when she was shown no kindness whatsoever and and so obviously despised? I am sorry for Pat in her distress, but my goodness, she has brought it on herself.

'Poor Pat' is very probably a Guardian reader as surreyboy suggests. On the other hand Sharon sounded more like a tabloid sort. Not sure which is worse!
'Rich' might have lied about his age and earned a bit of pocket money as a sperm donor...........what a wonderful symmetry that would create. Come on script writers think of these things, we should not have to be doing your job for you.

    I liked Sharon!

Pat's not that middle-class, is she? If she were, she'd be shuddering at the name "Rich"! And Tom would have been banned from seeing a girl called "Brenda".

Now... wouldn't it be wonderful if "Rich" becomes overexcited and inspired at the thought of inheriting Bridge Farm, decides to go to agricultural college, laughs scornfully at organic ideals and decides to farm using every chemical and pesticide known to ICI, + a little sideline in mink for the fur market. Pat and Tony gone, Helen, Henry, and the dreadful Tom and Bren banished forever - weeping and wailing - I LOVE IT!

Sharon's bloke should have slammed the phone down on Tony. His and Pat's supercilious contempt for Sharon is still very apparent. As it is, and in order to keep the story going, I suspect their meeting with Rich will lead to other things - after all, nobody with a common accent is going to stop a pushy snob like Pat from doing what she wants.

sharon was the only real woman on the archers for years.
she had a good figure and a lovely derriere!
OK she was a bit common but the plus points over came those. these days only Jolene knows how to treat a man.
as for Kathy, she should wash her hair and shave her legs a bit more often....
