After listening to Sharon's Hardyesque story of her walk to Bridge Farm after John's death, I'm wondering: Was there an episode at the time when this "really" happened and were the editors laying down a storyline that would be picked up 13 years later. Or are they just making it all up?

No, they haven't just made it up--I remember a scene where Pat met Sharon after John's death, and Pat was very sharp and dismissive towards Sharon, whom she'd always regarded as a loose woman/bad lot.

Vanessa Whitburn has often hinted at Archers Addicscts gatherings that a number of plots have been laid down to be picked up in the futhre and John's son's storyline is most probably one of them. I too remember the hostility Pat and Tony showed to Sharon after John died.

I also remember how shocked Pat was when she found a pair of Sharon's knickers in John's bed!

I hate to say so, but am I the only listener who finds Pat (character) is always very sharp and off hand? I've only been listening for a year but I just can't seem to take to her...would love to know what you think.

Pat Archer has always been a straight talking character, always saying what she thinks and having fairly strong views on lots of issues. In the early days she was described as a feminist and she was never really particularly maternal. She was always very passionate about the causes she believed in. She's been a bit of a crusader in her time too - she was the one who made Ambridge a transitional village, wanted a community shop (instead of a conversion to a flat), was prominent in the campaign against an anerobic digester in Ambridge and, of course, organic produce has always been close to her heart!

Having said all that Pat is dependable, loyal and stands by those she loves(Helen when she wanted to have a baby, Kathy during her trial and recent troubles with Jamie and (contary to current belief!) Sharon - she took her in and gave her a home (in a caravan on the farm) and a job when nobody else wanted to know her - to name just a few!

There's no doubt her character has changed and mellowed in recent years and since the e-coli, Henry, and the Rich storyline she's shown a real vulnerable emotional side.

......well...Kazzie you asked what we thought....and as you can tell from the above I've always quite liked dear old Pat!!

Portia, I have to say what you've put about Pat is entirely accurate but nevertheless there's something of the Guardian reader about her. She smugly knows she's always in the right all the time.
